Social Skills Groups for Children With Asperger's Syndrome
Successfully navigating the social world is one of the biggest challenges facing a child diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome.
Whereas other children often acquire social skills naturally or by observing their peers, those with Asperger's Syndrome need to be explicitly taught how to effectively relate with others.
Children with Asperger's Syndrome may have difficulty reading subtle social cues or understanding day-to-day social conventions. They don't really understand how to fit in. They may get frustrated easily and they don't have the coping skills to control their emotional reactions.
Without these skills, your child is at risk for bullying, teasing, and being shunned and isolated. The effects on their self esteem are often devastating.
Developing social skills will also greatly influence the types of friends your child makes, or tries to make. If your child moves into early adulthood without these skills, they are at a real disadvantage in all areas of their life, including the workplace.
Fall Creek offers your child the opportunity to experience success and growth in their social skills. We offer small groups led by a therapist familiar with the specific needs of your child. We also help you, their parent , acquire the tools to reinforce your child's group learning and to help them practice what their new skills.
We adjust our goals to fit your child. Depending upon the current level of your child's social skills, we may start with basic skills such as eye contact and using and interpreting facial expressions. Examples of more advanced social skills include the ability to maintain friendships through give and take conversation and activity sharing, accepting feedback appropriately, and assertively dealing with peer pressure.
To ensure individualized attention and customized approaches, we limit the size of each group to between 3 and 6 children.
For more information please call Dr. Moore at (916) 344-0900. Because we want to insure that the group is a good fit for your child, we will require you to complete an informational questionnaire and attend a screening meeting prior to joining the group.
